Your hybrid or electric car won’t start — and the dashboard says the battery’s fine. It’s a confusing, worrying moment, especially if you’re picturing a bill running into thousands.
Take a breath first. In the huge majority of cases, that’s not what’s actually wrong.
A G Autos is a mobile mechanic covering Birmingham and the surrounding areas. We come to you, test the right part first, and — in most cases — fix it there and then.

Two batteries, one very common mix-up
Every hybrid and electric car actually runs on two separate batteries:
- The main battery — the big one that drives the wheels. Expensive to replace, and rarely the actual problem.
- The 12V battery — a small, ordinary battery, almost identical to the one in an ordinary petrol car. Its only job is to “wake up” the car’s computers so the main battery can even engage.
If that small 12V battery is weak, the car won’t start at all—even though the main battery is fully charged. This is the fault behind most “dead” hybrid and EV call-outs we attend.
This isn’t a rare fluke, either. A major UK owner survey published in 2026, covering more than 63,000 drivers, found that full hybrid owners are around four times more likely than petrol drivers to be left with a flat 12V battery, and EV/plug-in hybrid owners around twice as likely.
Is your car one of the models affected?
Several popular models have a documented, higher-than-average rate of this exact fault:
| Model | How common the fault is |
|---|---|
| Lexus LBX | Nearly 1 in 3 cars under 4 years old |
| Hyundai Ioniq 5 | Over 1 in 4 |
| Toyota Yaris Cross | Almost 1 in 5 |
| Kia EV6 / Soul EV | Almost 1 in 5 |
| Hyundai Kona Electric | Around 1 in 6 |
| Toyota Yaris | Around 1 in 8 |
| Toyota Corolla | Around 1 in 11 |
| Ford Kuga PHEV | Around 1 in 9 |
If you drive one of these and your car has been slow, hesitant, or reluctant to start recently, it’s well worth getting the 12V battery checked before it leaves you stranded.
Why it’s usually a much smaller job than you fear
Replacing a full hybrid or EV main battery can run into several thousand pounds. A 12V battery is a completely different job — typically a small fraction of that cost, and often done in the time it takes to have a cup of tea.
We always test the 12V battery first, and only ever discuss the main battery if the evidence genuinely points that way. No guesswork, no upselling — just an honest diagnosis before any conversation about cost.
What happens when we come out to you
- You call or book us in — tell us the symptoms (slow to start, clicking, dashboard warnings, or won’t start at all).
- We come to your home or workplace anywhere in Birmingham and the surrounding areas — no need to arrange a tow or sit in a dealer’s waiting room.
- We test the 12V battery on-site, along with the charging system, to confirm exactly what’s wrong.
- In most cases, we fix it there and then — same visit, fixed-price quote before any work starts.
- If it genuinely is the main battery, we’ll tell you plainly and talk you through your options — we won’t invent a bigger job to justify the call-out.
Areas we cover
Birmingham city-wide, plus Edgbaston, Harborne, Selly Oak, Kings Heath, Moseley, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Erdington, Perry Barr, and the surrounding West Midlands. Not sure if you’re in range? Just call and ask.
Frequently asked questions
My hybrid or EV won’t start but the dashboard says the battery is fine — what’s wrong? This is almost always the small 12V battery, not the main hybrid/EV battery. It powers the car’s computers and has to “wake up” the rest of the system — if it’s weak, the car won’t start even though the main battery is fully charged. We test this on-site, and it’s usually a much cheaper fix than people expect.
Is my hybrid or EV a model known for battery problems? Several popular models have a documented higher rate of 12V battery issues, including the Toyota Yaris, Yaris Cross and Corolla, the Lexus LBX, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric, and the Kia EV6 and Soul EV. If you drive one of these and your car has been slow to start, it’s worth getting the 12V battery checked.
Will fixing this cost as much as replacing the main hybrid battery? No — in the vast majority of cases the fault is the small 12V battery, which is a fraction of the cost of the main battery. We always test the 12V first before discussing anything more expensive.
Do you repair or recondition the main hybrid/EV battery pack? Our mobile service focuses on diagnosing and fixing the 12V battery — the cause of most hybrid and EV starting problems. If our testing shows the main battery genuinely needs attention, we’ll talk you through the honest options rather than guess.
How quickly can you come out? Call 07979 290613 and we’ll confirm the soonest available slot. Many battery and starting-fault call-outs can be handled same-day.
